Bottled Water a good thing?

Purchasing bottled water is  a common practice these days the idea of bottled water was presented to the masses as a good thing. The stated benefits to bottled water was that it was safer and purer. We are so gullible did we ever think to stop and ask ..., how can water be safer in a petroleum based bottle than from the springs of which it was originally created? Duh!
